Our Present Time Exhibition

Next month the Our Present Time exhibition will open and run through the end of September. It will be visible from the windows on Bedford and Monroe, and feature sculptures imbued with our mindful work. Submissions for the exhibition will be accepted until July 31*. 

I will be in touch regarding a virtual (or possibly a socially distant) walk-through and reception for the exhibition in September.

How to submit work for the exhibition:

The Our Present Time exhibition is a space for our work to come together in the gallery while we are still apart. It will also be an exchange, where participating artists will receive a work by another artist by letting go of a work of their own. 

Each artist is asked to make two small sculptures using their pound of clay or playdough. Consider these two works to be in relation with each other. They can be quite the same or quite different, but consider the idea of “call and response” as a model. In music, “call and response” may be simply repeating a phrase, or it may be responding to that initial phrase with an alternate style or flair. 

  • Participation in the exhibition involves letting go of one of your sculptures and receiving someone else’s sculpture in turn. Make each of your sculptures knowing that one will not be returned.

  • If you weren’t able to attend, check out the exercises from July 23. It's this type of approach that should drive the work.

  • Please be aware that breakage during firing is often part of the process. If your piece breaks, I may intervene and reattach broken pieces that may have come from your work or from someone else’s. 

  • You may put your name on your work, though it isn't necessary. For identification purposes, email a snapshot of your work with your name as you would like it to be displayed for the exhibition.

Bring your work to Artshack to be fired by Friday, July 31.

For those of you working with playdough or unable to drop off work to be fired, submit photos of your works for the exhibition by August 8.  

Take time to shoot your works from various angles, and play with different backgrounds and lighting. Send as many photos as you like to ourpresenttime@gmail.com. Photos of your work will be printed and displayed in the gallery. At the end of the exhibition you will receive two photos in the mail, one of your work and one of someone else's work. Be sure to include your mailing address with your photos.
